By now you are well aware of our music department theft that occurred at Northwest Christian. A group of thieves gained entry to the school on Sunday night and early Monday morning, broke into our music room and took every working instrument. This includes a full set of handbells (recently donated to the school), an assortment of power tools, a TV monitor, computer equipment and several smaller items.
The past two days have been a whirlwind between working with the Puyallup Police, sifting through surveillance video, talking to reporters, and teaching students about God’s grace.
We are getting hundreds of questions.
What Happened: It appears from the surveillance footage that an individual must have slipped into the school during one of two public events held at the school on Sunday. The police agree with our assumption that an individual hid inside the secured building and waited until early morning hours to give others entrance. We have a lot of video footage showing these individuals moving around the school in the early morning hours. Some of this footage you probably saw on television.
Security Cameras: As evidenced in this situation, the security cameras played a critical role in the investigation of the crime as well as enhancing the community awareness by providing a visual of the event that went out through the media.
Investigation: The police have located the white truck! However, none of the instruments or stolen goods have been recovered. The police are still working on this case to bring resolution.
Insurance: The school does have insurance. There is a $5,000 deductible, and our community is coming together to raise these funds and additional funds to support the NCS music program. We are amazed at the community response!
Community Response: We are proud to be part of a community that values education and supporting schools! Reporters spent time on Monday gathering footage and conducting interviews. Kent and Alan from STAR 101.5 committed a full hour to fundraising on behalf of the school’s music program.
The school is receiving phone calls and emails with prayers and support. Individuals, businesses, and music stores are contacting NCS to donate instruments, give funds, and partner with the school. This is simply overwhelming! Through all of this, we praise the Lord for His leading in a difficult situation.
School Response: There is truth to the messages in the Lord’s prayer: “Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one (Matthew 6:9-13).
Our students are learning more about God and goodness through this situation than they would have learned in an entire year. This is prayer week at the school and students are learning how God can turn a bad situation into a good situation even when we don’t understand “why.”
Students are signing thank you cards for each and every identified donor. Thank you for your support and concern! Students are looking forward to making music once again at Northwest Christian School!
